100 years ago: 1916 Snow Storm

Research by Dave Ramstad:

Perhaps the biggest snow storm in Everett history starting January 31 for three days in 1916, dumping 30 inches in Everett. Here are some photos from that time. Meanwhile, in Seattle the dome of St James Cathedral came crashing down due to the massive weight of the wet snow (fortunately with no injuries).

Snow ruled all of January, from storm Dec 31, 1915 on, week by week.  It was frozen and under freezing the entire time, but the snows that fell before Jan 31 were thought fairly normal for winter at that time. But the one Jan 31st was the whopper, broke all records, crushed roofs everywhere, froze river and lakes, stopped all movement, all logging and mill work, fuel was running low for everyone, trains all parked, etc.
The weather broke and snow stopped about the night of Feb 2, followed be a  gradual thaw.  Next emergency – flooding.

100 years later, we enjoy 45 degree weather!
